Recap General Meeting

Beautiful Quilts, and Other Events: October 2023

Janice Balakoski shows off her beautiful autumn leaf quilt.

What a great meeting last night! I really want to thank all of the quilters who participated in our impromptu “Quilters Feud.” The questions were meant to challenge us and spark some quilting related discussions: Mission Accomplished.  I’m sorry everyone didn’t get to go home with the $10,000 prize (well, no one went home with that prize). In addition, our guild is moving forward with Bylaws and Standing Rules that will provide structure for success in our years to come, all because they were approved last night! Yahoo!

I hope our  weather cools down again so we can enjoy some crisp autumn sewing weather. May all your stitches be blessed!

Jeri

Thank you to everyone and especially our Show-and-Share ladies! While we had announced that we would show some more Challenge Quilts, instead we moved on to our game. We’ll catch up with those who have Challenge Quilts at a later meeting.

Jeri Read and Susan Miller kept us all on our toes with an Impromptu Quilters Feud game. Debbie Warner was the grand prize winner, winning all the squares that we used in the game.

This involved questions like “the pineapple block is an offshoot of which well-known block” and “what five things go on a quilt label.” It also involved banging on a bell, trying to outwit your opponent so we could put a ticket in the jar. Thank you, Jeri and Susan and all else who helped!

We had a webpage dedicated to the process, and the Bylaws Committee want to thank everyone for helping in this process with questions, so we could make it better. Also on that page is an outline of our transition and the timeline. Please be thinking about if you’d like to run for office, or serve as a Standing Chair, or in some other capacity in our organization. We can’t do it without you!

For our November 2023 General Meeting we’ll be playing the annual exchange game, and Dawn Babbe, our VP has asked us to make bags or carry-alls. In a search on the web, these blurbs all revolve around the idea that we all love tote bags — yes, we do! In September, Chris showed us her fat-quarter tote bag. We have a tote bag “Happy Bag” pattern right here on our website. Elizabeth has a tote bag tutorial on her website. Another search brought up this page of tote bag tutorials. Whatever you make, bring it to November’s meeting for our annual Exchange Game. If you have a favorite tote bag pattern or a go-to tutorial, send a link to raincrossqg@gmail.com and we’ll update this post and add them.

To keep track of all our outside activities, please refer to our Activities Tab, in our Header above. This will hold all the details for retreats, field trips, etc. If you are hosting an activity, or know of one we should be aware of (yes, Quilts of Valor ceremonies too!), please send an email to raincrossqg@gmail.com.

  • Hope everyone had fun at the Hoffman Field Trip. Thank you again to Evie Rienstra for organizing this. Patty Huddleston sent some photos; a few are up on the Activities tab, above.
  • RETREATS: The Beach Retreat is next week (!), and we still have three openings, if you want to jump in and have fun. And it’s Spring Retreat sign-up time! See the Activities Tab, above, for more information on both retreats.
  • We won’t have a SEW DAY AT GOESKE October 21st, because the building was not available. See you November 21st and December 18th.
  • We also won’t have a 4th SATURDAY SEW DAY October 28th because of the Beach Retreat. If you have plans to attend our 4th Saturday Sew Days, please drop Barbara Mathews a note ahead of time, so she knows how many tables to set up.
  • The Raincross Guild Executive Board Meeting is the second Tuesday of the month. See Jeri Read for more information. When available, minutes of that Board Meeting will be posted up under the History tab, above. The Zoom code to join is in Members Only, but please drop Jeri a note letting her know you’ll attend.
  • QUILTS OF VALOR: Please see Phyllis or Sandy to help with turning our Quilts of Valor quilt tops into quilts. We need quilters, so if you are a quilter and have room in your schedule, or know of someone who would be happy to volunteer their time, please contact these two ladies.
  • CALENDAR at the side of this blog page alerts you to upcoming events. It only holds a limited amount of slots, but we do try to keep you up-to-date in this yellow box.
  • IF YOU HAVE AN ANNOUNCEMENT, please email us at raincrossqg@gmail.com.

We showed you some quilts from the most recent AQS show, and what into the mailbox should appear? Quilts from the upcoming Houston Show. Above is Flora, the Goddess of Spring, by Galla Grotto. More can be seen on their website of Judged Show Winners.

On the left is Circling Sevenstar by Lyn Crump, and on the right is Prickly Pear, by Susan Braverman.

Finally, some sad news. Bluebird Quilts, in Grand Terrace, is closing. Janet sent out a letter to those on the mailing list, and right now there is 20% off most everything in the store. She doesn’t know when she’ll finally close her doors, but expects it will be soon (when everything is gone). She said that the sale is also good on her website.
