Recap General Meeting

We had a great time! May Meeting 2024

(listening to our speaker)

We had a lot going on this past meeting, so be sure to read this entire post, including Announcements. Jeri Read conducted our meeting, with guest speaker Laura Prior, from the Inland Empire Quilt Guild.

We had an Opportunity Quilt from Inland Empire Quilt Guild (above), classes to sign up for, elections, exhibits to see — we were a busy group Tuesday, May 21, 2024!

First up, was Show and Share, in alphabetical order, by last name:

  • Carrie Alldis showed three quilts: way to go on those finishes!
  • Karen Dunivent showed us a quilt and a bag
  • Elizabeth Eastmond finished a Collage Quilt, inspired by our Speaker, Barbara Mathews, in March 2024
  • Ladonne Evers had a quilt with red, white and blue
  • Linda Kim had blue quilt, framed in grey and white
  • Dorothy Martinez showed us a quilt of colorful skirts on señoritas

Jeri introduced our speaker: Laura Prior.  She noted that she lives in Norco and learned her basic sewing from watching her mother, and from her participation in 4H.  She loves making bags, shadow box miniatures, fabric bowls, and of course, quilts.  She made her first quilt in 1993 and has been steadily making ever since.  Enjoy the slide show below (click to advance).

Laura’s Workshop will be held June 15th, from 9 -3 p.m. where the students will have a chance to make a large see-through tote out of clear vinyl and fabric (held by Cassandra, above).  The location is the Lake Mathews Community Room, where we hold our monthly sew days.  The class costs $40 and the pattern is $8.  Laura said to buy 12 or 14-gauge clear vinyl, 1/2 yard, to bring to class. If you want to come to the class, please contact us at raincrossqg@gmail.com. Classes must be paid for in advance; there are no refunds.

Bags and Miniatures are by Laura Prior.

Save the dates of November 1st-3rd for our Fall Retreat, held locally at the Ayres Hotel.  Please see the Activities Tab on our website for more information, or contact Barbara Mathews (address is found in Members Only).

Community Project: Sewing Kits for Uganda

Paula Wilcoxon and Jeri Read are showing the Guild the bags they can make to assist women in Uganda become self-sufficient. Yvonne Weinstein goes back and forth to that country, assisting Ugandan women gain marketable skills to support their families. We can help by making bags, which we hope to fill with basic sewing supplies. Yvonne and her husband are having a Zoom Party on May 30th to talk about it all (see below). DEADLINE IS JUNE 18TH!!

Yvonne writes:
Thank you to members of the guild who have done so much for so many women in Uganda over the years.  Thank you also for letting me talk at the last guild meeting and asking for help with another project. I appreciated the way so many were very interested in helping make cosmetic bags for sewing kits, and even donated money or offered to buy things to include. The guild is filled with women who are willing to help in so many ways; you are all making a difference.

How to help with the sewing kit project:

The Goal: Make at least 100 Zippered Cosmetics bags to be used for sewing kits.
Why: Yvonne will be in Uganda in July, teaching hand sewing classes to groups of women, and would like to gift each lady with a sewing kit to provide the tools needed to make items to sew and sell long after the class so they can buy food for their children. Contents of the completed sewing kit for each woman will include: scissors, thread, pins, needles, and tape measure.
Materials: You may use any fabric and a zipper from your stash, but Paula Wilcoxon has prepared kits which include a fabric, lining, interfacing, and zipper. The only thing you need to provide is thread. The kits are available to pick up from myself, Yvonne Weinstein, 5240 Monterey Road, 92506 (951) 500-6484 or from Paula on May 8th at Goeske from 4:30-6:30.
Pattern: The pattern is available as a free download at: https://so-sew-easy.com/easy-cosmetics-bag-pattern/ and includes a video tutorial.
Donations: We are continuing to accept money donations to pay for the items and to pay to take the extra luggage to Uganda. The cost per extra 50 pound luggage is $200.00. If you would like to contribute for a tax donation either electronically or via a check, the link is www.empoweringugandans.org .
Deadlines: June 18 (Guild Meeting) You can bring them to the guild meeting or contact myself or Paula to make other arrangements (phone numbers and email addresses are found in the Members Only tab, above).

Once again, thanks for all your support in helping complete this project.
Yvonne

NOTE: Please see the Zoom invite in the Members Only tab.

We caught a few of you, with your projects that you bring to Guild. We love seeing what you are doing!

Quilts of Valor

Phyllis writes: I have 2 Quilts of Valor ready to be quilted if someone would please step up and complete them.  I will be purchasing more wide backing to complete quilt tops we have. We need more completed quilts to fill the requests. If you wish to work on tops, we are meeting the first Tuesday of the every month at Easy Quilting Corner.  {See more information on our new Community Projects Tab, above.)

I am looking for someone to help me with Quilts of Valor, cutting backing, sorting fabric, possibly help in storing fabric and learning the NAMS system for Quilts of Valor Foundation.  Let me know if you are interested.

Chris Kearns and Barbara Kaiser did the drawings for Door Prizes. Pam Waters put together a terrific Mystery Box, and after Jeri passed out the Angie Bags, the meeting was adjourned.
