Recap General Meeting

Round the Quilter We Go • Recap of July 16, 2024 General Meeting

We had a blast on Tuesday evening, doing a Round Robin experience — going from Double-Binding to Scrappy Crumb Quilting to Batting Splicing to Accidental Landscapes. Pictures are below as well as a handout from the Double-Binding. Thank you to everyone for coming. First up, a message from our new President, Barbara Mathews:

I’m very grateful for so many members who have stepped up to take positions on the Board, as Chair people, and in Auxiliary positions. And especially those that came forward to fill unexpected vacancies!  I’m blessed to work with such a talented and giving group of women!
I’m sure some of our missing members were due to vacations and maybe out-of-town guests – it’s that time of the year!  We had a good crowd – all with “sunshiny faces”! I do appreciate your patience with the Board and Chairs, as we navigate new waters; we plan on being very transparent with all information pertaining to the Guild. I’d like to invite anyone who has questions, concerns, or ideas to send an email to the Guild email (raincrossqg@gmail.com) and let us know what you’re thinking.
I want to encourage everyone to get to know our website – LOTS of info there!  As a current member you should have received the new password to the Members Only section – don’t forget to confirm your information on the roster.
Well, until next month – Keep on keepin’ on – SEWING, that is!
Barbara, Guild President

Michelle Coiro showed three quilts.

L to R: Rene Phares, Carrie Alldis, Marsha Welch

L to R: Jennifer Hayford (2 quilts), Joan Moreno

L to R: Fern Fujimoto (2 quilts), Nancy Roth

Nancy Poole made most of this top on her Featherweight Sewing Machine cruise.

We had a Round Robin with four different stations. Up on the stage, Barbara Mathews showed us how to make Accidental Landscapes, using thoughtfully placed fabrics.

Next to her was Rose Ornelas, who showed “Crumb Quilting,” or using small scraps to make a bigger scrappy block. When one quilter asked about a different style, Rose said it was a “Potato Chip” block–because you can’t make just one!

It was hard to capture Chris Kerns, because she was in action the whole time, while showing us how to put on a two-color binding. Her handout can be downloaded below:

While showing us how to fuse batting together, using the Marti Mitchell batting tape, Linda gave a quick smile to show how easy it was to fuse your batting scraps.

Because of a quick change in the program on Tuesday afternoon, all these women are remarkable for pulling together something for us to enjoy. If you have a skill, or an idea for a program, or have a favorite teacher you want us to book, please drop us a note at our email: raincrossqg@gmail.com and we’ll see what we can do!

We have two new members of our Board: (L) is Vickie Milhelich, who has taken the Treasurer spot. Thank you to all who raised their hand to volunteer when we sent out the call. Vangie Gorman has taken the Hospitality Spot, and Joan Moreno (on the R) will be in charge of Cat & Dog Beds.

You can find more details about all of this in our excellent minutes, taken by our new Secretary, Barbara Kaiser. Easy to read, and it will keep you all up to date on everything; they are found in the Minutes & History tab, above. ALL THE ANNOUNCEMENTS ARE FOUND ON THE MINUTES, SO PLEASE TAKE A MINUTE TO READ THEM. (Thank you.)

After stopping in this week, we thought you’d want to know.

Don’t forget! We have a Facebook Group, too, where you can see the photos that Yvonne posted of all your Sewing Kit bags. Lots of action over there, too, if you miss us in between meetings.

Newspaper Challenge • Raincross Quilt Guild • [Due December 2024]

What is black and white and red all over? A newspaper, of course, which has inspired this challenge. Make whatever your heart desires with black and white fabrics plus any one color you would like to add to the mix.

  • The black fabrics and the white fabrics can be solids. The black fabrics and the white fabrics can be prints — i.e. white on black or black on white — no grays and no colors.
  • Select a single fabric for your color — a solid or a tone-on-tone that reads as a solid. While the challenge is primarily black-and-white, you may use as much of your single color fabric as you want.

For the December reveal, select one of the following four categories for your creation:

  • Quilts
  • Wall hangings
  • Wearables and bags
  • Other

If you cannot make up your mind on which category fits best, flip a coin to decide, or we can help you when you come in December. Your artwork will be displayed for viewing at the December meeting where we will vote for our favorites in each category. Questions? Please contact Jennifer Hayford or Evie Rienstra, who are our Challenge Chairs. (Numbers are on our roster in the Members Only. Password was sent to you last week.)
