Quilts of Valor: Group Leader Barbara Filbin

Barbara Mathews and myself met with the Janet Goeske Center, and we have good news!  We will have the Ken Calvert room for the Quilts of Valor National Sew Day, Saturday 2/7/26!

I’m asking Guild Members who are planning to attend to please let me know so we can hold your spot,(we will be opening spaces to others & Goeske patrons in January).  It will be a great day to assist in making quilts for our Veterans!

Barbara Filbin

Veterans are some of my favorite people, and through Quilts of Valor (QOV) I have the opportunity to meet and serve so many. QOV has been going strong nationally for over 20 years and providing healing quilts to over 400,000 deserving Veterans. Our Raincross Quilt Guild has been involved with QOV for many years (I know there have been at least 4 leaders before myself, each setting the bar a little higher), working to fulfill the mission of QOV.

As a guild group we have completed the last of the National Sew Day Quilt tops (started in February), and are sending it off to be quilted. Our new group project are log cabin blocks. Both of thse used bits and pieces left over from other QOV projects. We’ve built a small supply of quilts, and currently planning award ceremonies.

Meeting once a month to work together on projects (1st Wed. of the month 4-6:30pm at Goeske) talking, laughing and having fun! Look under Activities and Retreats for more information. All are welcome!

I try to have “kits” ready to go, and tops to quilt or bind as well. Your participation is key to the success. You may be asked to assist at an award ceremony as well, especially if you worked on one of the quilts being awarded. Guild members have stepped up and helped to complete some not so fun but necessary tasks. YOU are so appreciated.

Do you have a family member of friend who is a veteran? A special request while working on a quilt? Just have questions about QOV? Call me or text me. I am here to support the Guild’s efforts.

Strong participation in this project by guild members is needed as the guild continues to serve the Veteran Community. Are you in?

I tell Veterans, thank you for your service and Guild members thank you for your support!

NORA Bags

Formerly known as Riverside Area Rape Crisis Center (RARCC Bags Survivor Bags)

These Larger Tote bags are bigger, as they are meant for an older group of people, who need to hold more stuff. There are two patterns available for you to download: one brand new (Larger Tote Bag Pattern) and one old (RARCC Bag).

Animal Shelter Beds: Joan Moreno

Joan Moreno writes: Our Guild has recently donated 24 cat beds to our local shelters. You may bring finished cat beds to any guild meeting or if you are unable to come to our meetings, I may be able to pick them up from you (if the distance isn’t too great). Both the Mary Roberts and the Riverside County shelter have told me that they prefer donations of old blankets and towels for dogs. They are just too destructive for filled beds. I would be happy to deliver these also, to the shelters.  Thank you for supporting this community service project.

While the above flier is an old recommendation, it is possibly out of date (see Joan for more info). Riverside County of Department of Animal Services now uses a different kind of bed. If you visit their Donate Page, they have a listing for what they would like to receive (including Kuranda beds, shown to the left). Unfortunately for Raincross, stuffed pet beds are not on their list, but they do have a flier asking for donations for the beds. If you are donating to another county, please check their websites for information about what they need.

The Mary S. Roberts Pet Adoption Center is seeking volunteers to sew cat carrier covers for the shelter cats. The shelter is a “Fear Free Shelter” and believes covering carriers during transport helps reduce stress for the animals. Volunteers can take home the needed blankets and sew them into covers, which can then be returned to the shelter. If interested, contact volunteer@petsadoption.org. Please make them out of breathable material (save the flannels for winter). The pattern can be found on this page. (Click the above link from the Mary Roberts Shelter to download.)

Child Abuse Advocacy Center

This is a new project for our guild. Details are still being updated. This center, which is located in Los Angeles, has asked us to provide comfort quilts for children who are going through one of the most stressful days of their life.

Think: “children” both genders, not babies, but maybe baby quilt sized or slightly larger.

Think “Snuggle in this”

And then sew.

LA County Fair – Home Arts exhibit

Opportunity

We were approached by Kate Weber (SCCQG Insurance) at Road to California. She would like to promote quilting at the LA County Fair. She said you can volunteer in the Home Arts area as an individual or a group and get a table to demonstrate quilting techniques as an educational opportunity or to promote our guild. Participants would get free parking and fair entry on the day you volunteer.
