Tina Curran, Outside Speaker
Curran will be presenting her lecture, “My Design Process — From Concept to Quilt.” Her workshop will be held November 9th and will be her Whimsical Garden Quilt. You can find her on Instagram, or ETSY, or at her website.

Here’s the final project. She writes: “As a quilt pattern designer, I am often asked if my designs come to me fully formed. The answer, of course, is, ‘No.’ The goal of this lecture is to demystify the design process I use by breaking it down into its elements. I’ll provide many examples of the design & execution challenges I’ve faced and my solutions to overcome them. My hope with this lecture is to inspire other quilters to design their own quilts.”
Her Whimsical Garden quilt (25″) will be our workshop November 9th. The cost is $50. When you sign up, by sending an email to raincrossqg@gmail.com, and send your payment, we will send you the info about where it will be held.
Her supply list is comprehensive, enabling you to gather all your supplies for class. Click *HERE* to see it.

Annual Christmas Potluck and Newspaper Challenge Reveal
Vangie Gorman, our Hospitality Chair writes about our annual Christmas potluck:
Come join in on the fun. Please bring your favorite dish to share be it a casserole, salad, deviled eggs what ever you like — or, of course — dessert. And if you have a new dish you want to try out to make sure you like it, try it out on us. The guild will be providing the green salad, dressing, plates and utensils. My request is, if you are bringing a pizza have the pizza guy do an additional cut to make the pieces a more manageable size. Please also cut your cakes or pies before bringing. Thank you so much. See you soon!
Newspaper Challenge • Raincross Quilt Guild • Due December 2024
What is black and white and red all over? A newspaper, of course, which has inspired this challenge. Make whatever your heart desires with black and white fabrics plus any one color you would like to add to the mix.
- The black fabrics and the white fabrics can be solids. The black fabrics and the white fabrics can be prints — i.e. white on black or black on white — no grays and no colors.
- Tone-on-tone black fabric is okay to use in the challenge. We just don’t want an outright gray fabric.
- Select a single fabric for your color — a solid or a tone-on-tone that reads as a solid. While the challenge is primarily black-and-white, you may use as much of your single color fabric as you want.
For the December reveal, select one of the following four categories for your creation:
- Quilts
- Wall hangings
- Wearables and bags
- Other
If you cannot make up your mind on which category fits best, flip a coin to decide, or we can help you when you come in December. Your project will be displayed for viewing at the December meeting where we will vote for our favorites in each category. Questions? Please contact Jennifer Hayford or Evie Rienstra, who are our Challenge Chairs. (Numbers are on our roster in the Members Only. Password was sent to you last month.)

Note: Our December (Opportunity Prize) will be a Christmas-themed bag of Christmas items. It won’t be a mystery and tickets will be back to a dollar each or 6 for 5 dollars. Support our guild with your purchase of tickets!

Please note there is a date change for our January 2025 meeting. It will be switched to Wednesday, January 29th, so it doesn’t conflict with Road to California’s Preview Night.

OPEN MIKE NIGHT
Our program will be Open Mike Night with these three categories:
- Road-to-California Wrap-Up
- Best Quilting Tool
- Best Sewing Tip.
Figure out which one you want to do. If you wish to participate, please contact Maria Copak or Fern Fujimoto (numbers are on roster in Members Only). Or, sign up at the back on the night of the meeting, if you had a class, or found something unusual.
Visual Aids are always encouraged! In other words, bring something to show for your category: either quilt blocks or project from a Road class, or the Best Quilting Tool, or, if possible, an illustration of the Tip.
Also, as a reminder, if you are buying a basic notion, consider buying an extra and donating it to the quilters who lost everything in the Los Angeles fires. Please refer to your email that was sent out this week. The donation booth for these things will be at Road, and is run by the Southern California Council of Quilt Guilds (SCCQG).

OUR NEW CHALLENGE BEGINS!
Jennifer Hayford & Evie Rienstra announced that the Ugly Fabric Challenge begins this month (January) and is due in May. Please note the following:
- Fabric needs to be cotton.
- Fabric does not need to be pre-washed.
- Choose 1/2 yd (or more) single piece of “ugly” quilting fabric from your stash
- Bring it in a closed plain brown paper bag to be numbered at the door for the exchange.
- Participating members will be given a ticket for the exchange drawing.
- After a bag exchange, members will create something using the fabric to be shown at May general meeting. As Bonnie Hunter says “if you don’t like the fabric, you haven’t cut it small enough.”
- Please save a 2 1/2″ square of original fabric from the half yard. This needs to be pinned to finished project to easily identify it.
The Challenge is that each member will make something of their choosing, using the fabric they “won” in January. This Challenge is due at the May meeting, and the usual categories apply:
- Quilts (of all sizes)
- Tablescapes (table toppers, table runners, placements, casserole covers)
- Wearables (if you dare)
- Small Makes (formerly the “Other” category) such as purses, tote bags, pencil cases, tablet cases, and so forth–remember that part of the challenge is using all of the fabric in the bag!)

Guild Member Presentation:

Kathy Voltzmeyer, one of our very own members will be giving a quilt show of her quilts.
NOTICE: This month we need to convene a Nominating Committee to gather names for us for a slate of officers to vote on in June. Please jump in to help, if you can. If you can help, please contact Barbara Matthews, our President.
We’d also like to pull together a By-Laws/Standing Rules Committee. They will clarifying some rules and laws, and possibly working with the calendar, and some internal structure. This is an important committee, and we’d love to have a couple of members from the Board and at least two members from the General Guild. If you can help, please contact Barbara Matthews, President.
Pam Waters, who runs our Opportunity Program, let us know that tonight there will be a Brown Bag Opportunity. If any member found something nice to donate to the Member Opportunity Prize at Road it will be much appreciated.
If you missed the UGLY FABRIC swap from our February meeting, you can also turn it in this month.

Dessert Potluck–bring your favorite desert to share

Members will need to bring:
- pair of scissors,
- if you have a pair of pinking shears for the edges, that would be great, too.
- Also encouraged:
- embellishments, like buttons, rick-rack or lace
- embroidery floss,
- orphan blocks,
- hand sewing needles
- needle threaders
- thread wax.
One of our members found this little heart at QuiltCon in Austin, TX in 2020. You can see that it’s scrappy, perhaps made from cut-offs from a block. It has a simple tag (bring cardstock if you have some), and has a wee little button and some twisted string. So, raid your sewing room, and bring bits and pieces and quilted chunks and thread and some notions. This will be a hand project while we do our shopping for our Trash-to-Treasures that night. If you can share supplies, that would be great, too.
DIY activity: “I Found a Quilted Heart” is the website for our hand-sewing project
There will be no Member Opportunity Prize or Sew And Share because of the Trash to Treasure event.

Elections
The Nominating Committee will present the nominations for the the new 2025-2026 Raincross Quilt Guild Board.
As our program, we’d like to feature 3-4 mini trunk shows around the theme of Flower/Nature in quilts. If you have done a series/few quilts on that theme, and haven’t shown them before, please contact Maria Copak (Program Chair) to be considered. Five quilts maximum per person.

Ugly Fabric Challenge Guidelines (available as a download above)
Use a minimum of the equivalent of 1/4 yard of your ugly fabric in your creation. If your creation is too small to use that much, then use enough to be sure your ugly fabric is clearly noticeable. Your challenge fabric does not need to be the focus of your creation.
Set aside a swatch of your ugly fabric that is about 4″ square. Pin this piece to your finished creation so everyone will know which fabric was the object of your challenge.
Enter your challenge in one of the following four categories. You decide which category fits your creation best
- Quilts (of all sizes)
- Table toppers or sets
- Wearables and bags
Challenges are due in May and must be finished. Adding a label to your creation is
optional, not required.
There will be prizes for Viewers’ Choice in each category.
