This is a recap of the December 2024 meeting of the Raincross Quilt Guild. It was held December 17th, and boy, did we have a lot going on and a lot of fun!

We had so many wonderful entries for our “Newspaper Challenge” which was black and white and a bit of color. Thank you for all who entered and completed the challenge!

Thank you to Jennifer Hayford and Evie Rienstra, standing next to our President Barbara Mathews (in red). They organized it all and got us going. First is a slideshow of all the entries in a happy and jumbled order (click to advance):

Wearables were some spectacular aprons.

We had quite a few wallhangings/table runners/small quilts/etc.

And then the “Other” category: purses, totes, sewing machine cover, placemats and casserole covers.
WINNERS OF THE BLACK & WHITE & POP OF COLOR CHALLENGE: Other – Elizabeth Eastmond, Quilts – Susan Helliar, Wall Hangings/Table Runners – Jeri Read, Wearables – Ronda Gilbert

We were busy this last month, and we had quite a show. First up, were Susan Hillier, Debbie Warner and Gail Olmedo with a show of quilted jackets and bags:

Then we had our regular Show and Share. We were happy to see such fun quilts — thank you to all who brought them. Click on arrow to advance the slideshow.

We’d started off our meeting with our annual Potluck dinner and there were so many delicious dishes to choose from. Thank you to Vangie Gorman for coordinating everything and buying us those cute napkins and plates. It puts us in the celebrating spirit. And thank you to all who brought food and sweets to share!
We have a few announcements, to keep you up to date:
Information from SCCQG
(That’s Southern California Council of Quilt Guilds, to which we belong)
Charlotte Byrne, our representative to the SCCQG writes:
At their last quarterly meeting the topic was – October 2024 – Affordable Alternatives for Guild Programs and Workshops. They presented the results from a guild survey regarding this topic and a lot of ideas from participants at the meeting for different programs or workshops. For more information and the ability to watch the meeting head over to the SCCQG.com website. Then go to the Home page and scroll down to the bottom of the screen to the box labeled: Program Notes. Then scroll to the area just below the box to: October 2024 – Affordable Alternatives for Guild Programs and Workshops. There you will find links to the documents and Zoom Recordings.
The next meeting is January 11, 2025 with the topic – Quilt Guilds – Money Matters. This meeting will cover fiscal issues forms, and documents pertinent to quilt guilds.
In addition, SCCQG is sponsoring a Special Exhibit at Road2CA Quilters Conference. This exhibit will display how quilters take a “traditional” pattern, give it ‘a twist,’ and create an interesting new work. Group and individually made quilts will be accepted for consideration. If you need more information on the January SCCQG quarterly meeting or the Special Exhibit at Road2CA send an email to raincrossqg@gmail.com and we will respond.

Barbara Filbin writes: I want to express my heartfelt THANKS to the Guild Members who so warmly welcomed me at the meeting! Also a special Thank You to the members who volunteered to take tops to quilt, and those who took kits with them! I’m so excited to be leading this group. If I can answer any QOV questions, please let me know. (Contact information is on the roster under the Members Only tab.)
Currently todays numbers:
5 at long armers
1 at brave domestic machine quilter
7 tops in progress
1 newly finished top
Guild members have been busy, with multiple quilt tops on frames, additional kits being sewn with care. With six nearing completion, I am confident we are halfway to the needed quilts for the 10 veterans currently “award ready.” I‘m happy to invite members to sew for QOV. [Please see the tab Community Projects for more info.]
Behind the scenes, I completed the training to manage the QOV website, have been matching backs with many of the tops Phyllis left in my care adding batting to prep for quilting, the bins of fabric are presenting many great ideas for top kits in the future. I’m optimistic so I’ll bring tops ready to quilt, and some kits to the meeting on the 17th. You can always contact me with QOV program questions. Wishing everyone a great holiday season. The support from the Guild is Awesome!
NOTE: Sue Carter and the Communications team have been trying to get the Community Projects page up to date (see tab, above). Please check there for more information about QOV and our other projects. Drop a note to Sue, if you need more information.

Raincross Quilt Guild’s Vina De Lestonac retreat on May 2-4, 2025 is less than six months away! We hope you are making plans to join the group of 18 for three days and two nights of sewing fun and great meals and camaraderie, in the middle of the Temecula vineyards. Get your $150 deposit in and make easy monthly payments through April 2025; we are over half full right now. Talk to Linda Adams or Mary Mertz or check with Linda at next guild meeting in January. Their contact info is in the directory under Members Only tab.

If you didn’t know, every year around Thanksgiving Bonnie Hunter hosts a free Quiltville Mystery, with all part available for download for a limited time. It’s a good way to deplete your excess stash while making a lovely quilt. Head to her website and click on Old Town Mystery (or just use this link). She has her other Mystery Quilt patterns for sale, if you want to make some of her earlier creations (or maybe use for your Ugly Fabric Challenge, coming in January). Download the parts to the Mystery NOW, as she takes them down after it’s finished.

This is a quilt that was shown, but we didn’t get a photo of it. It’s a free pattern! Head to OPQuilt.com to get your free download, and get ready to make for 2025!
